Fall Prevention
Preventing Falls, Promoting Independence: Practical Tips for Safer Aging at Home
At WelbeHealth, we believe aging should be full of dignity, connection, and confidence. That’s why we were honored to host our recent Wellness Webinar: Fall Prevention for Seniors—a vital conversation designed to equip older adults, caregivers, and families with real tools to reduce fall risks and live more safely at home.
If you missed it- here is a short recap and a few tips from our WelbeHealth clinical team members.
Why Fall Prevention Matters Now
Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older, with more than 14 million older adults—1 in 4—reporting a fall each year (CDC, 2023). Many of these incidents are preventable with simple awareness and preparation. During the webinar, our experts—including Dr. Danielle Basurco and Physical Therapist Jamie Marsch—shared how seniors can stay safe and confident at home.

Here are a few highlights and takeaways:
- Know your risk: Medications, poor vision, and loss of balance can increase your chances of falling. Talk with your doctor regularly to manage risks.
- Create a safer home: Remove throw rugs, secure cords, improve lighting—especially in hallways and stairs—and install grab bars in bathrooms.
- Watch out for pets: While our furry companions bring joy, they can be a tripping hazard. Consider adding small bells to collars so you can hear them approaching.
- Keep moving: Light physical activity, even chair-based exercises, helps maintain strength and balance.
- Partner with experts: Occupational and physical therapy can offer personalized plans to improve stability and reduce fall risk.
Introducing the SMILE Campaign
A standout tool from the session was our SMILE campaign—a simple, memorable way to remember everyday fall prevention steps:
S: Slow movements
M: Modify your environment
I: Investigate your surroundings
L: Learn what makes you safest in our environment
E: Environment around you matters.
